The collection consists of three items: letter to William R. Alger, 5 Jan. 1860, accompanying a copy of his book on spiritualism, Footfalls on the Boundaries of Another World, similar to Alger's Critical History of the Doctrine of Future Life [with two typed transcriptions]; to Mrs. M.J.T. Burke, 22 Feb. 1874, offering condolences on the death of her father, diplomat Nicholas Trist, a friend of Owen's; also, envelope addressed to Abram Lawrence, New York, postmarked 23 March [inscribed Plan for Reforming Society by R. Dale Owen 1845 M.P.].

Politician, reformer, and author Robert Dale Owen was born in Scotland; influenced by his father, he developed a strong interest in social reform. He moved to New Harmony, Indiana, where he joined the socialist community his father founded there, and he was active as an educator, editor, and author, including the first birth control pamphlet published in America.
